Be optimistic! Vienna on a rainy day can be an enjoyable experience! I have some suggestions for you:
– the classic tip! Visit a museum! We have some world-renowned museums like the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Fine Art), Museum of Natural History, Weltmuseum Vienna, Upper Belvedere, Imperial Treasury, Leopold Museum and many others.
A less known museum is the Vienna Snow Globe Museum in the 17th district of Vienna, which has been in operation for more than 120 years.
A guided visit with a private guide will be a great learning experience on a rainy day in Vienna. See my guided visits in Viennese Museums.
– how about swimming in the oldest indoor bath of Vienna? Jörgerbad or former Kaiser-Franz-Joseph-Bad opened 1914. The interior is in Modern style, Art Nouveau style. The glass ceiling can be opened, certainly when it does not rain! There is a sauna and a steam bath. Snacks can be bought at the buffet. It is run by the Municipality of Vienna and the admission fee is just 7,60 EUR. The address is Jörgerstraße 42-44, 1170 Vienna. Easy to reach by tram 43 from Schottentor.
– spend the day in the thermal pools of Therme Oberlaa! It is one of the largest modern thermal baths in Europe. At the European Health & Spa Awards 2011 it got the first place in the category Best Thermal Spa. There are about 15 pools indoors and outdoors, a fitness area, a restaurant and it is great for children. Very easy to get to by metro line U1.
– see a movie! Several cinemas in Vienna offer movies in the original language, such as Burg Kino. Three times a week they show The third Man, a 1949 British film noir shot in Vienna. Directed by Carol Reed and starring Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, and Alida Valli, the plot is based on Graham Greene’s novel, set in post-World War II Vienna. The film is framed by the unforgettable zither melody by Anton Karas. You might recognize some of the iconic locations in the city, including the Giant Ferris Wheel. Learn more about films shot in Vienna here.
– go shopping!! Shopping malls are easy to reach by public transportation. I suggest Wien Mitte The Mall, Westfield Donau Zentrum, Lugner City.
Now, in Vienna, you can buy exquisite products for fine dining, such as porcelain and glass. Visit the flagship stores of Augarten Wien – Porzellanmanufaktur at Spiegelgasse 3 or Lobmeyr on Kärtnerstrasse 26, both located in the first district of Vienna.
